The meaning runs through the breaks. Start with Scar—box elder that broke on the lathe, rim gone to rot. I could have turned it smooth, erased the failure. Instead I cut into the break, made the damage the point. The red interior is the tree's own scar tissue, its response to fungus and beetles. I just followed where the damage wanted to go.
This is the frequency: material fact before philosophy. Autumn came from a block of dried clay someone else abandoned, their finger marks still visible where they grabbed chunks for something else. My instructor saw me failing at building up and said try taking away. First time my hands found their real work. Ray came from my worst fear—a perfectly square block with no history, no voice. As the clay dried it became my partner. I peeled squiggles with a wire loop, pressed them into a ball. Made a pit bull's head from what I removed. The dog is Ray's inverse, its negative made positive.
The reclamation isn't metaphor. It's what happens when Bug Holes keeps its beetle tunnels, when Orb's rot becomes its void. Resistance lives in Bear Claw's alabaster—stone that arrives jagged and wants the softness water would have given over geologic time. I did the river's work in the studio. Becomingness accumulates through repetition: Scroll, Shell, Birdseye all carrying spirals I cut without knowing where they'd end. Each groove suggesting the next. The indecision became the form.
Some pieces know themselves immediately. Cobra emerged from solving problems, not intention—I made an indentation to pull the form together and discovered a cobra hood when I turned it on edge. Also reads as a seed from another angle. The abstraction is the point. Sinead changes with the viewer, two faces of one identity. Wing split itself—I carved a V down the oak's center and the wood decided to fly.
The meaning isn't in any one piece. It's in the accumulation. Twenty-six attempts to find what happens when material meets its limit and keeps going. Subtractive process as philosophy: you find what's there by taking away what isn't. Sometimes the void was already waiting (Cedar's natural inclusion). Sometimes I made it (Tulip's intentional cut). Sometimes the wood made it for me.
The Lion sits on my shelf, gold-painted and humble—my first sculpture, the piece that taught me what I didn't want to make. Bad at being a lion. Perfect at being a threshold.

The owner had a tree taken out and saved the wood but had too much for his own purposes. When he learned the artist was a woodworker, he offered some. Three chunks were taken. The rot in the middle of this piece made it difficult to work with — and that rot became the void.",
